Special Weather Statement issued February 28 at 6:10AM EST by NWS Miami FL
AREAS AFFECTED: Hendry; Inland Palm Beach County; Coastal Collier County; Inland Collier County; Inland Broward County; Inland Miami-Dade County
DESCRIPTION: Fog has developed across interior portions of South Florida early this morning. Visibility is expected to be one mile or less across these areas through 8 AM, with some locations down to as low as a half-mile. Smoke from the wildfires in the Big Cypress National Preserve will mix with the fog and cause low visibility over the eastern half of Collier County. Motorists are advised to drive with caution this morning as visibilities may widely vary over short distances. Use low beam headlights and leave extra distance between your vehicle and others on the road when encountering significant reductions in visibility. Allow extra time to travel to destinations.

Freezing rain is a condition where precipitation which has fallen in the form of
water droplets reaches temperatures which are below freezing and freezes upon
coming into contact
with surface objects. The result of this precipitation is a glaze of ice which
can be damaging to plants and man-made structures. A severe onset of freezing
rain which results in a very thick glaze of ice is known as an ice storm.

Hail is a form of precipitation which is recognized by large solid balls or
clumps of ice. Hail is created by thunderstorm clouds with strong updrafts of wind.
As the hailstones remain in the updraft, ice is deposited onto them until their
weight becomes heavy enough for them to fall to the earth's surface.
Hail storms can cause significant damage to crops, aircrafts, and man-made structures,
despite the fact that the duration is usually less than ten minutes.
